Martin Luther King Jr. dayEvery year, on the third Monday in Jan, Americans enjoy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, one of the national holidays in the honor of the civil rights leader and activist. On this day, the public are encouraged to consider his legacy as well as the principles he stood for, including nonviolence and racial equity.

In 1777 in 1777 the U.S. Continental Congress proclaimed it a national holiday, but left the actual declaration of the holiday to the states afterwards. This meant that Southerners were in a lull to adopt this holiday, and some even objected to the fact that the day was being used for political speeches and parades.
